Checkered Sneakers Can Make Every Second Count

A few years ago, I experienced a depressing time in my life. The sudden loss of a close friend, the constant dissatisfaction from an emotional absent father, and a family engaged in a brutal legal fight, left me vulnerable and disheartened. However, with the little hope left inside of me, I decided to make a change in my life. My chance at a better life was simple: to help others any way possible. Feeling motivated, one Sunday morning I decided to put my goal into action by attending a Mass service at my local church, offering to altar serve. However, I was wearing checkered sneakers, which were prohibited. While I was discouraged, I asked Deacon Phil for permission. His immediate response was “no”, but after I pleaded, he asked the pastor for the final decision, Father Leach. Father Leach firmly disagreed with Deacon Phil, permitting me to serve the mass. It was the first time in over a year I felt wanted, and more importantly, I smiled. He closed the conversation by advising Phil, “to live up and go get yourself a pair,” with a loud chuckle. That’s Father Leach’s attitude towards life: making every minute count. That moment changed my life forever. Father Leach wasn’t concerned with the shoes on my feet; he saw the opportunity to influence a young child who clearly needed support. Since then, we have been inseparable close friends. He’s taught me everything necessary to know about life through his words and actions. A Catholic priest, he has no children of his own, yet he treats all children as if they were his. He adores all kids, and believes they should be loved unconditionally by everyone. He’s led our parish to success during these tough times, ensuring that we are financially and spiritually stable. He uses his education in counseling and psychology to benefit the parish, offering us assistance and advice whenever needed. He motivates us all to serve the unfortunate with our abilities, as he does everyday. Whenever things don’t turn out as planned, he thinks it’s best to be humorous. He believes we must accept imperfections and work with what we’re given. His happiness is contagious and his optimism empowers us all. His compassion, kindness, and generosity are an amazing example. He has a strong passion to make a difference. He has even done the impossible: making me laugh when I don’t even want to smile. His words are just as inspiring: “With every forest that burns down, new life and new hope soon follows.” “Sacrifice is burdensome to most people, but love makes it possible. And perfect love makes it a joy.” “There comes a point in every person’s life when they must decide what’s important. Then, they must fight for it until the battle has been won.” This is truly a man who lives each day as if it is his last. He seizes every moment, spreads love and happiness to all, and is always there for guidance and encouragement.
